Maconda Brown O’Connor Scholarships Provide Early Learning Education

Dr. Maconda Brown O’Connor was a visionary leader for Houston’s children. By leading the process to create the Greater Houston Collaborative for Children in partnership with Charles Bonjean of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, Dr. O’Connor pioneered a systems-based approach to improving early education.

This approach continues to inspire initiatives that support families and providers who interact with young children every day, solidifying foundations for lifelong development. Through a generous gift from the Brown family to honor Dr. O’Connor and her legacy, Collaborative for Children offers a scholarship program to facilitate the continuing education of child care teachers.

The Maconda Brown O’Connor Scholarship covers tuition for early learning teachers and directors to complete childhood education courses. Eligible candidates must work full-time as a child care teacher, director or homecare provider in one of the neighborhoods where Collaborative for Children is implementing intensive quality improvement programs. Scholarships will be awarded to deserving applicants each year prior to the start of the fall and spring semesters.

With the support of the Brown family and other generous contributors, Collaborative for Children continues to pursue Dr. O’Connor’s vision. Collaborative for Children’s staff are working continuously to promote positive early learning environments that lead to the growth of productive and prosperous communities and a brighter future for Greater Houston. The Maconda Brown O’Connor Scholarship Fund points toward further progress in improving the early education system for all children.
