Institute for Early Learning Receives Funding for Math Training from the Boeing Company
Collaborative for Children’s Institute for Early Learning received a generous gift from the Boeing Company to create valuable math training for early childhood educators. Recognizing that the majority of students entering kindergarten in Houston ISD lack beginning numeracy knowledge including number recognition and counting, the need for improvement in early math instruction is great.
Preschool and early care teachers have a critical role to play in helping young children begin school with the math skills they need for success, but research has shown that many teachers are uncomfortable teaching math or lack the tools to effectively guide their math instruction of young learners.
With the funding support of the Boeing Company, Collaborative for Children has created a “Making Math Meaningful” series for preschool and early childhood teachers focusing on math in the early education classroom. The series includes three online modules: “Math in Our World,” “Numbers and Geometry” and “Measurement and Patterns.” Each module is aligned with state pre-kindergarten guidelines, includes strategies for dual-language learners and shows implementation of techniques and activities in real classroom settings through photography and video clips.
The courses will be available to child care teachers and directors through the Collaborative for Children website.
