Kean Foundation Gift Honors Faith and Future

Faith-based providers are an important piece of the child care system in Greater Houston. Approximately 70 faith-based child care providers participate in Collaborative for Children’s quality improvement programs. Motivated by providers that are building the mental, physical, and spiritual foundation for our region’s youngest citizens, the Steven J. and Melissa C. Kean Charitable Foundation has donated $100,000 to Collaborative for Children.

“We’re delighted to support the great work of Carol Shattuck and her team at the Collaborative for Children. Quality childcare and early education are essential to giving everyone the chance to have a happy, productive and meaningful life,” said Steve Kean, president and CEO of Kinder Morgan. He emphasized the role of faith-based early education providers in building a strong foundation of moral and character development that is so needed in our community and in our world. The Kean family’s gift is expanding quality early learning opportunities for young children across the 13-county Greater Houston region.

A long-time supporter of Collaborative for Children, Mr. Kean is continuing his involvement in a new role as the inaugural member of the newly formed Board of Advisors. The Board of Advisors will serve Collaborative for Children through their professional expertise, connections with stakeholders, and philanthropic support - mobilizing a community of champions for quality early childhood education.

“Steve embodies the type of leadership Greater Houston needs to ensure every child in Houston has the opportunity to fulfill his or her potential,” said Carol Shattuck, Collaborative for Children president and CEO. “Collaborative for Children could not be more excited to have Steve as the first member of our Board of Advisors; this sets a solid precedent for the future of the board and is further evidence that high-quality early education for every child is a growing priority in Greater Houston,” Ms. Shattuck said.

Positive change is possible through leaders such as Steve and Melissa Kean, who recognize that the future depends on all children having access to quality educational opportunities beginning at birth. Thanks to the support of the Keans and the Steven J. and Melissa C. Kean Charitable Foundation, momentum for improved early education is building in Greater Houston.
