What is Collaborative for Children?

Collaborative for Children traces its roots to 1987, with a history grounded in two organizations: Greater Houston Collaborative for Children (GHCC) and Initiatives for Children (IFC). Together, these two organizations provided more than 23 years of combined service to the community. Collaborative for Children was formally founded in 2004. Who Does Collaborative for Children Serve?

Collaborative for Children serves to improve the lives of young children from birth to age six, their families and the teachers and care providers who help them grow. The organization also offers community programs and support for parents with children of all ages, as well as information on school-age care and resources for children with special needs. We also take action to positively impact state, local and national policy surrounding early childhood education and development.

What are the Organization's Primary Areas of Focus?

Collaborative for Children primarily focuses on these efforts:

  • Educating parents of young children and helping them locate child care
  • Offering counsel, resources and training to parents and child care professionals
  • Stressing the importance of child development within the community at large
  • Partnering with community advocates to coordinate resources and efforts benefiting early care and education systems
  • Improving the quality of child care through public policy research and activities

How is the Organization Structured?

Collaborative for Children is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of leaders and concerned citizens from various sectors of the community. Two additional groups, the Partner's Council and Community Volunteers, also provide guidance and leadership. These groups are comprised of individuals and collectives from foundations, businesses, educational institutions, government entities, along with children's service providers. More than 250 leaders and experts are actively involved in guiding and advising Collaborative for Children.

Carol S. Shattuck is President and CEO of Collaborative for Children, Pat Calelly is V.P. of Administration & CFO, Sul Ross is V.P. of Programs & Collaboration Development and Erin Charlton is V.P. of Resource Development & Public Relations.
